What is the best design for a fast, small, wooden boat for a school project and a boat race?
The boat should be 0.5 meters long, made of wood or metal, and be able to carry at least 6 kilograms. No styrofoam is allowed. It should have a propeller and of course, an engine for it to work. The boat must also have a sail for design. It should also be fast, because we are going to have a boat race, and the winner will get a cash price. Please help… we need to finish the boat by october 9. Thanks!
P.S. I will not ride in the boat… I will just put a 6 kg weight (such as a set of metal weights) inside the boat.
If you know of a site that shows boat designs or blueprints for free, please also state them, ok?
Thank You!
Handcrafting your own wooden boat is both a rewarding and enjoyable project to undertake. Constructing a boat may seem like a daunting task to the novice but anyone with a knowledge of wood working or any other construction experience should be able to follow a set of plans and successfully build a boat.

Here are some of the tools you will require when building a boat. Remember if you spend the money on good quality tools they will last you a lifetime.
- Chisels and wooden mallet

- Drill and drill bits
- Screwdrivers

Boat building plans
Once you have all the required tools you have to decide on which type of boat you would like to build. You will of course be limited by the space you have available to build your boat, so ensure you have the available space to comfortably build your boat. To begin with you should start out with a smaller boat 10 to 12 foot is a good starting size.
There are many websites that sell boat building plans or even look at your local library for books on boat building to save some money. When purchasing plans don’t be afraid to ask for a preview or sample so you can check that the plans you intend to purchase are have all the necessarily details.
Materials
The plans you are following should include a set of materials required to build the boat. Depending on your budget you can use cheaper timbers such as pine and marine ply or spend more on timbers like oak and redwood. You will also require nails, screws and glues, be sure that these materials are suitable for marine use.
Pre-Fabricated Kits
A good way to get started is to purchase a pre-fabricated boat kit. These kit come with all the timber and materials required to construct your boat with the added advantage that everything has been cut to size for you so all that is required is to assemble the pieces.
Hopefully you now have a better understanding of what is required to get started in boat building and decide to take the next step and build a boat of your own. Remember to take your time and read all the instructions carefully and you should have no problems building a boat you can enjoy with your family.
