Sailing On A Felucca – A Memorable Nile River Cruise
Nothing beats sailing on a felucca on the Nile River when visiting Egypt. Feluccas, large wooden boats with a single sail have remained, over the centuries, the primary means of transportation on the Nile. Even today, feluccas rely entirely on the southern breezes and river currents as they have since the time of the pharaohs. Before venturing on a sailing however, haggling over the price is a must as Egyptians expect to drive a hard bargain, and then settle for about $3- $5 for an hourly rate.
A sunset cruise on a felucca is a veritable sound and light show. The whishing and threshing of the rustling breeze intermingled with the melodic eastern chants from multiple minarets, the sun’s rays playing on the meandering wavelets of the shimmering waters, and the purple red-yellow-orange shades of the setting sun in the azure sky are visions seen nowhere else.
Though not as comfortable or luxurious as a cruise ship, time stands still when sailing on a quiet rig that was designed thousands of years ago. This is the ultimate means of steering a uniquely relaxing course off the beaten path.
Gliding along in cushy comfort, there is so much to see, much of it not accessible by any other means. Sailing north from Aswan, you’ll pass small islets, sand dunes and palm groves. Stop to walk along shallow canals and lovely villages where locals and children gather around curiously to greet you. From a distance, watch cattle graze lazily on the verdant fields of many Nile islands.
Sailing on a Felucca is a relaxing way of visiting some of Egypt’s ancient ruins as well, among them Kom Ombo, the temple shared by the two gods Sobek and Horus, and the magnificent great temple of Horus at Edfu.
Night on a felucca brings with it an other-worldly sense of calm. These are not deluxe five-star accommodations, but the comfortable mats, the sounds of the lapping waves against the boat, the star-studded sky and the cool air as you drowse off to sleep are an adventure not to be missed. Sunrise dawns with the calls to prayer from mosques upstream and down, as another day begins on the River Nile.
Feluccas used on the Nile since antiquity are not only a laid-back, relaxing way to spend a sunny afternoon, a day or a week

Have a great day!
Stop and think about it for a moment. Weren’t your days at the lake on a lazy hot summer day some of your favorite childhood memories? For those of you that are a little “carpentry challenged” boat building plans come in all shapes and sizes if you have ever dreamed of making one of your own. But a little history might be interesting first.
One of the most durable and practical boats is called a dory. If you saw the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean” you know that Captain Jack was left with a dory at the island of Tortuga (a major source of piracy in the 17th) after promising Giselle and Scarlett a ride on the Pearl. Many believe that dories go back even further than that to around 300 AD when they were used on the Arabian Sea.
The name dory probably came from one or two places. Many believe that it originated with the Dauro River in Spain and Portugal. Others are convinced that it was a derivative of the John Dory fish that were commonly found in Nova Scotia.
Wooden dories are the boat of choice for fishing boat plans for several reasons. Wood has the ability to absorb vibrations which is very important to fishing enthusiasts. Less vibration means more sound absorption on the water. It makes for a much more “stealthy” approach!
While it might seem counterintuitive, wooden boats can actually weigh half as much as their fiberglass counterparts if they are constructed properly. You can take a basic design and adapt it with wood to any idea you might have in your head. If cared for properly wooden boats can last 25 or 30 years.
Dories are extremely versatile in any kind of conditions due to their sea worthiness. Their narrow bottoms can be deceptive and make you think that they aren’t sturdy. The do tend to “roll” with the waves to some degree but stiffen up at a certain point. They carry a lot of cargo and can be easily maneuvered by one person.
One of the things that you definitely need to consider is how the investment of your time on a project like this will affect your relationship(s) with the woman or women in your life. Many guys noticeably have a problem in this area when the task becomes a little overwhelming. At the risk of sounding a little crass, an online matchmaking site may be something to keep in mind if you are still single and your gal really starts getting crazy with this.
But, let’s get back on topic here. You can generally build your own boat with the tools that you have in the garage. The main thing that you need to have is persistence, patience and a desire to see the project through from start to end. It takes a lot of labor any time you are working with wood but the results are so satisfying when you can finally look at the results.
Some guys even decide that they have the skills and determination to build a house boat. If you are really determined and have a good guide you can even pull off something like this! As with any project, labor is always the major expense. You can save yourself thousands of dollars by doing it yourself.
Hopefully, you will act upon your dreams and build a boat that you can be proud of for many years to come! The satisfaction and pride in the project will far outweigh the effort involved when you see it on the water!
